How To Build a Bedroom Window Seat Built-in With Desk, Dresser, and Bookshelves Woodworking DIY Project
Creating a custom-built bedroom space that combines a desk, window seat, dresser, and shelves is a great way to maximize functionality while also adding a touch of personal style. A well-designed built-in can transform your bedroom into a cozy, efficient, and stylish sanctuary. In this blog post, we’ll guide you through the process of designing and building your own bedroom built-in, covering everything from planning and materials to construction and finishing touches.
Step 1: Planning Your Built-In
The first step in creating a bedroom built-in is to plan the layout. This involves understanding your needs, taking measurements, and sketching out the design.
If you want to build the built-in that I created for my daughters room you can download the plan and 3D SketchUp model here.

Assess Your Needs:
Consider how you will use the space. Do you need a large workspace for a computer and books, or will a smaller desk suffice? How much storage do you need in the dresser? Do you want the window seat to be a cozy reading nook with storage underneath? Answering these questions will help you prioritize the different components of the built-in.
Measure the Space:
Accurate measurements are crucial for a successful built-in. Measure the length, height, and depth of the area where you plan to install the built-in. Note any architectural features, such as baseboards, windows, and electrical outlets, that might affect the design. If the built-in will be around a window, measure the distance from the floor to the bottom of the window, the width of the window, and the space on either side.
Sketch the Design:
Once you have your measurements, sketch a rough design of the built-in. Start with the basic layout, including the desk, window seat, dresser, and shelves. Think about the placement of each component and how they will interact with each other. For instance, placing the desk near the window can provide natural light for working. Use graph paper or a digital design tool to create a scaled drawing of the built-in. This will help you visualize the space and make any necessary adjustments before you begin construction.
Step 2: Choosing Materials
The materials you choose will have a significant impact on the appearance and durability of your built-in. Here are some options to consider:
Wood:
Solid wood, such as oak, maple, or cherry, is a durable and attractive option for built-ins. It can be stained or painted to match your bedroom’s decor. If you're looking for a more budget-friendly option, consider using plywood with a hardwood veneer. Plywood is strong, easy to work with, and available in various thicknesses.
Plywood:
Plywood is what I use to build all my cabinets and built-ins. It is easy to work with and is stronger and more lasting that MDF.
MDF (Medium-Density Fiberboard):
MDF is a popular choice for built-ins because it is smooth, easy to paint, and less expensive than solid wood. However, it is not as strong as plywood and may sag over time, especially in long spans like shelves. Reinforce MDF with additional support if you choose this material.
Hardware:
Select high-quality hardware, such as drawer slides, hinges, and knobs, to ensure your built-in functions smoothly. Soft-close drawer slides and hinges are a great option for a quieter, more refined experience.
Finishing Materials:
Consider how you will finish the built-in. You might choose to paint it to match the room’s walls or stain it for a natural wood look. If painting, choose a durable paint that can withstand daily use. For stained finishes, use a clear protective coat to enhance durability.
Step 3: Building the Frame
The frame is the foundation of your built-in. It provides the structure that will support the desk, window seat, dresser, and shelves. Here’s how to build the frame:
Mark the Layout:
Using a pencil, mark the layout of the built-in on the walls and floor. This will serve as a guide for assembling the frame. Use a level to ensure that all lines are straight and even.
Build the Base:
Start by building the base of the built-in. The base is typically made from 2x4 lumber and should be anchored to the wall and floor using screws. Cut the 2x4s to the appropriate length and assemble the base with wood screws. Make sure the base is level before securing it in place. It is important to note that I did not build a base for my built-ins. If you want to see this method check out my primary closet build.
Construct the Frame:
Next, construct the vertical supports for the frame. These supports will define the compartments for the desk, window seat, dresser, and shelves. Cut 2x4s to the desired height and attach them to the base using screws. Use a level to ensure the supports are plumb (vertically straight). Add horizontal supports to connect the vertical supports and create a sturdy frame.
Install the Back Panel:
Attach a plywood or MDF panel to the back of the frame. This panel will provide additional stability and serve as the back of the shelves and dresser. Secure the panel with screws, making sure it is flush with the frame.
Step 4: Adding the Desk, Window Seat, Dresser, and Shelves
With the frame in place, it’s time to add the functional components of your built-in.
Install the Desk:
Cut a piece of plywood or MDF to the desired size for the desk surface. Attach the desk to the frame using wood screws. For added support, you can install brackets underneath the desk. If you plan to use the desk for a computer, drill holes for cable management.
Build the Window Seat:
Cut a piece of plywood or MDF for the window seat. The seat should fit snugly between the vertical supports on either side of the window. Attach the seat to the frame using screws. If you want storage under the seat, build a simple box using plywood and install it underneath. Add a hinged top to the seat for easy access to the storage space.
Assemble the Dresser:
Build the dresser by constructing a series of drawers that fit into the frame. Use plywood or MDF for the drawer boxes and solid wood or MDF for the drawer fronts. Install drawer slides inside the frame and attach the drawers. Make sure the drawers slide smoothly and align with the rest of the built-in. Attach knobs or handles to the drawer fronts.
Install the Shelves:
Cut shelves from plywood or MDF and install them in the desired locations within the frame. Use shelf brackets or cleats attached to the frame to support the shelves. Ensure that the shelves are level and securely attached. Consider adding adjustable shelf brackets if you want the flexibility to change the shelf height in the future.
Step 5: Finishing Touches
Now that the main structure is complete, it’s time to add the finishing touches to your built-in.
Trim and Molding:
Add trim and molding to give your built-in a polished, professional look. Install baseboard trim along the bottom of the built-in to match the rest of the room. Add crown molding along the top for a decorative touch. Use trim to cover any gaps between the built-in and the walls or ceiling.
Paint or Stain:
Apply paint or stain to the built-in, depending on your preference. If painting, start with a primer to ensure good adhesion and a smooth finish. Use a high-quality paint or stain for durability. Apply multiple coats as needed, allowing each coat to dry before applying the next.
Install Hardware:
Attach hardware, such as drawer pulls, cabinet handles, and door knobs. Choose hardware that complements the overall design of the built-in and the style of your bedroom.
Add Cushions and Accessories:
For the window seat, add a custom cushion for comfort. Choose a fabric that complements your bedroom’s color scheme. Consider adding decorative pillows for a cozy, inviting look. Use baskets, bins, or decorative boxes on the shelves to keep items organized and add a personal touch.
Step 6: Enjoying Your New Built-In
With your built-in complete, take a moment to enjoy your hard work. You’ve created a functional and stylish addition to your bedroom that not only maximizes space but also adds value to your home. Use the desk for work or hobbies, relax on the window seat with a good book, and keep your clothes and belongings organized with the dresser and shelves.
Maintenance Tips
To keep your built-in looking its best, follow these simple maintenance tips:
- Clean Regularly: Dust the shelves and surfaces regularly to prevent the buildup of dirt and grime. Use a damp cloth to wipe down painted or stained surfaces.
- Check for Loose Hardware: Periodically check drawer slides, hinges, and other hardware for looseness. Tighten screws as needed to ensure smooth operation.
- Protect Surfaces: Use coasters or placemats on the desk and window seat to protect the surfaces from scratches and spills. Consider applying a clear protective coat to high-use areas for added durability.
